If you listened to Travis Scott’s Astroworld album from last year and more so the track “Can’t Say” then whether you know it or not, you will be very familiar with Don Toliver. Even more recently, if you have watched Travis Scott’s new Netflix documentary Travis Scott: Look Mom I Can Fly then you will know even more about the up and coming Houston born singer.
The singer is signed to Travis’s label, Cactus Jack that was only formed in recent years. Adopting a similar sound to Travis’s Alternative Hip-Hop/Trap sound, Don Toliver has a unique voice that is unlikely to be matched by many names within the same scene.
Toliver released his debut mixtape Play Familia in 2017 as an independent artist before being signed to Cactus Jack. The following year, as well as the already mentioned feature on Astroworld, Don released his follow up EP, entitled Donny Womack. The EP featured tracks such as “2 Lil Shorty” which features the catchy chorus and “Diva”. Both of the songs having racked up over 2 million plays and over 4 million plays retrospectively on Spotify.
Finishing the year on a high with the success of Astroworld, although he was never credited on the album (a common theme amongst Travis Scott’s previous album too), he has continued this high into this year. No EP or album has been dropped but there’s no issues as plenty of singles have been dropped. The track “Back Up” featuring Wiz Khalifa started 2019 off and has been very well received since. Three further singles have followed with “Best You Had”, “No Idea” and “Situation” generating more plays and attention.
Whilst Cactus Jack is still a growing label with other rising artists such as Sheck Wes signed, Travis Scott will be a huge mentor to these artists.
