Pop Smoke is an up and coming rapper hailing from Brooklyn, New York with UK listeners may not be as familiar with the rapper as American listeners are. The rapper dropped “Welcome To The Party” earlier this year and it has gone on to become one of the biggest Rap/Hip-Hop tracks of the year.
A fairly strong statement, even though The track has picked up close to 4 million listens on Spotify and just shy of 8 million views on Youtube. More to do with the fact that the American Hip-Hop/Rap scene has converged with the UK Drill beat makes the perfect mix for the track. Talking to Genius, Pop Smoke explains that the found the beat on Youtube. In fact, the beat is created by UK Drill producer 808Melo.
Tim Westwood has premiered two UK remixes of the track from Skepta and Russ but these are yet to be released on all platforms. Nicki Minaj is the first rapper to officially remix the track.
Judging by the fact that he found the beat on Youtube and that he highly unlikely knows 808Melo, Pop Smoke probably did not realise the track/beat would resonate with UK listeners as much. Although it does not appear to be a consciouso decision, Pop Smoke has branched himself over the Atlantic way quicker than some other American rappers may do so.
